Blurred Boundaries

by Balázs Fülei

In the history of keyboard instruments, the nineteenth century was the era of the birth of the modern piano. Two stimulating forc- es drove one another: performers’ increasing demands, with the playing of Franz Liszt at the forefront, compelled instrument makers to develop constantly, and successive new models of piano inspired in composers hith- erto unknown realms of the imagination. The increase in resonant surface, development in the ability of the keys to repeat notes, and the richer spectrum of tone colour enabled the instrument to prompt its listeners not only to intellectual games, but with its refinements to create the illusion of colours, scents, and aro- mas. Borders become blurred: though we hear notes with our ears, with some exaggeration we can say that in experiencing music all five senses come into play.
