Heritage

by Ildikó Szabó (cello)

The aim of this recording is not just to be a musicological curiosity, but to arouse the audience’s awareness of pieces and composers who have not yet been recorded, or are played less frequently; to inspire my colleagues to practice and master the special techniques in these works, and to show the way for interpretations of the works of Hungarian and Transylvanian composers, an interpretation which as well as the traditions of the Hungarian string school, draws “only from clear mountain springs” through personal relationships. (Ildikó Szabó)

“Two poems to Polly” poses an unusual challenge for the performer. One has to talk and play an instrument at the same time, similar to the way troubadours used to perform accompanying themselves on the guitar. I have heard this piece of mine in many recordings and concerts, with performers reporting not only about the difficulties, but also about how much they loved overcoming that challenge.

It is a rare opportunity for me to prepare a recording in such close cooperation with the performer. Ildikó Szabó and I have rehearsed together several times, moreover, I was present at the recording. The result is a recording with an exceptionally poignant atmosphere, displaying Ildikó Szabó’s superb playing and narration skills. (Péter Eötvös)

Ildikó is a great musician, it was a pleasure to work with her. Curious and flexible, she not only knows the pieces, but also feels the music. And she is aware that work cannot be rushed. The result is not urgent, the search is interesting. (György Kurtág)

Essential performances by a very special young cellist. (Alfred Brendel)
