Schubert: Piano Sonata in B-Flat Major, D. 960 - Brahms: 4 Ballades, Op. 10

by Alex Szilasi

The themes that appear in the first movement of Franz Schubert's Sonata in B flat major form a kind of inner motivic and harmonic reference, and thus in a complex manner they link up all the movements.

The music we hear in the first piece of Johannes Brahms’ Op. 10 Ballades is later put into a new light, and through conscious reference to the analogies of his musical models, the composer investigates symbolic aspects. The mysterious, inevitable fate of Franz Schubert’s wanderer and the figure in Johannes Brahms’ ballades thus gradually becomes clearer.
